25 July: The Pomona King of the Mountain Festival
It all began in 1958 when Bruce Samuels, a local footballer and railway porter, ran to the top of Mt Cooroora as a hangover cure, which he completed in under an hour… Although nobody remembers how many races followed. Established in 1979 The Lions Club reintroduced the race to the top of Mt Cooroora and elected to call it the “Pomona King of the Mountain Race” and what a well-known and well-loved this race has become!
Held every year in the Noosa Hinterland town of Pomona, the main Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, is held at 2.30pm. Are you prepared to take on the steep, practically vertical race up the mountain? This challenging 4.2km race to the top and back includes a set of low hills before runners take on the mountain ‘goat track’ and the return down requires strength, agility, balance and fearlessness.
Will you take on the mountain or support from the sidelines?
