Victorian couple’s first holiday in twelve years

John & Judith Brand 1

John and Judith Brand from Mt Macedon in Victoria were able to have their first holiday in 12 years thanks to Noosa Accommodation provider, Noosa Luxury Holidays.

John Brand had a stroke 12 years ago and has since been partially paralysed, needing wheel chair and specialist mobility equipment for his day-to-day requirements.

John and Judith have been staying at 15 Shorehaven Drive Noosa for a month, enjoying Noosa and the region. Noosa Luxury Holidays modified the entry to one of the showers and removed the shower door to enable wheel chair access, meaning the house was a suitable option for their holiday.

John’s wife Judith says that a lack of suitable accommodation facilities was the reason they have not been able to have a holiday for so long.

“Many holiday destinations are well-appointed for wheel chair accessibility in the civic areas, but there is a lack of accommodation options to back that up,” Judith says.

“We were lucky to find Noosa Luxury Holidays and 15 Shorehaven Drive, because the accommodation manager was willing to work with us to meet our needs.

“Within hours of our enquiry, we had a response from management saying they had consulted with the owner, who had agreed to modify the bathroom by building a ramp to accommodate John’s wheel chair.

“The house was fine for our needs in other respects, so this single act meant that we could make the booking and experience a fabulous holiday in Noosa that otherwise would not have been possible,” Judith says.

Noosa Luxury Holidays Manager Michael Svoboda says it is important for accommodation providers to be mindful of the needs of people with disabilities.

“If managers and owners are planning for renovations, for example, it is the perfect time to consider if the property can be made suitable for guests with disabilities.

“A property may have many of the necessary attributes already, such as being single-level with ramp or lift access, and need only a small modification to make it suitable,” Mr Svoboda says.

John says his stay at 15 Shorehaven Drive was made even more enjoyable because of its spacious corridors for ease of wheel-chair access, and a master bedroom large enough for the special bed needed for his sleeping requirements.

“I have enjoyed the fact that many of Noosa’s attractions such as the Noosa Canal Cruise, are wheelchair-friendly,” John says.

Judith says that they happened upon Noosa Luxury Holidays and 15 Shorehaven Drive purely by chance.

“Our daughter’s partner lives in Shorehaven Drive and our daughter saw the sign for holiday rental accommodation.

“We are so pleased that the management made these modifications that meant we were able to have a holiday for the first time in so long, and this had such a positive impact on our lives.

“I’d encourage more accommodation providers to consider the needs of people with disabilities and to help them have the same positive experience in Noosa that we have had,” Judith says.
