THE PROS ARE GO
Eagerly anticipated entry for pro and specialty divisions of the 2017 Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing are now officially open.
While amateur and age divisions have been gaining a swathe of entries from all over the world, the pro and specialty events were yet to be available for entry until 1 November. The festival team has been inundated with enquiries regarding this diverse range of divisions, and is anticipating an unprecedented influx of entries, with many already flooding in over the first two days.
The stand-up paddle community has been hankering to secure places across its numerous divisions, including the race events – the Battle of the Paddle and SUP Endurance Race, presented by Aussie Soles – and two surf divisions, the now familiar men’s and women’s SUP Surf events, as well as the newly inaugurated 10-foot+ Longboard SUP Surf division.
In many respects showcasing the cutting edge of contemporary longboarding, the Logger Pro and Women’s Pro both annually attract an international contingent of some of the finest longboard surfers in the world. With some 68 entrants this year, male and female, the Logger Pro has proven to be the most popular and attended division of the festival in recent years, and with the continual rise in popularity of more traditionally inspired equipment and surfing, 2017 is sure to be more popular than ever before.
Golden Breed returns once more to the Noosa Festival, presenting the world-renowned Golden Breed Noserider Pro. Always a huge festival draw card for spectators and competitors alike, the Golden Breed Noserider Pro is a spectacular display of skill, pitting surfers against the clock to achieve as much tip time as possible.
Also returning to the schedule of specialty events is the Garage Handplanes Body Bash, a boards-free division celebrating the growing discipline of bodysurfing. Twice winner and former world bodysurfing champion, Tom Marr will be returning to defend his title, also representing the division’s sponsor as leading Garage Handplanes ambassador.
The fast and frantic Teams Challenge will also be back in 2017, the tag-team event hugely popular, often controversial and always great fun amongst local and visiting surf clubs and factions. Four teams, four surfers each and forty minutes to score the best single wave per person before a desperate dash for the finish line.
Celebrating the family vibes and spirit of aloha, and the universal surfing family, Noosa Civic joins the festival for the first time to present the Family Challenge. Family values and environmental awareness are high on the agenda of Noosa Civic Shopping Centre, making it the perfect partnership, not only for the festival, but also the all-ages Family Challenge. Noosa Civic will also be hosting several events back on terra firma, with more news on those and other dry-land events and activities coming soon.
The already crammed schedule is going to be pushed to bursting for 2017, and the world’s largest surf festival continues to grow bigger, better and more popular with every passing year.
